Hoghtons Musket and Pike

During the English Civil War an infantry regiment would ideally number around 1,200 officers and men.  A regiment would be divided into 10 smaller units called companies.  Each company would have it's own colours and drummers.  In reality due to sickness, desertion, and casualties on the battlefield it would be very unusual for any regiment to be at full strength.  An infantry regiment would consist of two types of soldier, Pikemen and Musketeers, along with their Officers, Drummers and of course an Ensign, the officer whose job was to carry the regiment's colours.

In the Sealed Knot our regiments are a good deal smaller than the originals, usually about the size of an actual infantry company.  Active members of the Sealed Knot become pikemen, musketeers, camp followers, cavalry, baggage or gun crew.  There is no pressure to stay totally in one role you can try them all.

Hoghton's operate two fighting arms of service, the Pike and the Shot (Musket). Hoghton's is a foot regiment and has no cannon or cavalry. We also have roles for those who don't want to carry weapons (Non-Combatants) such as Drummer, Civilian or Camp Followers.

The battles are not everything an we also have a part to pay with the Living History which offers you the chance to meet and interact with the public, talking about life in the seventeenth century, and showing people how it might have been. Or you can be come part of the crowd line team looking after the crowds at the muster.

Although there are no age restrictions for joining you have to be at least 16 to take part in a battle. There is a flourishing youth group for the under sixteens called the Apprentices.
